Lighting Homework Emily

• We achieved this by using two lights. One light was closer to the person on the right and was brighter than the other light. The second light we used on the right side but made the brightness lower than the light of the left.
• We tried to create a shot using mise en scene similar to the shot we were given to create. To do this we used a book and had the person in a similar position, sitting.
• We found this frame hard to re create because we werent sure apart from the two light shown in the where  the lighting had come from.
• The lights highlighted in red is what confused us because we didnt have these to put in our shot.

Red indicates lights

• We had to guess the brightness of the lights.
• This lighting is to show a calm atmosphere.
• We also found it hard to create the same lighting effect without the lights being in the frame.

• In this shot we tried to re-create a shot given to us where they use side-lighting to emphasise the facial expression in the dull background but to also show that it is a dim setting and we only want to show features to set the mysterious scene.

• To create this shot you can see that we have use a light to the left of the character coming up from below shining op onto the face. This is making the left side of the picture a lot brighter than the right.
• It's good lighting to use in a thriller as it only lights up half the frame although it is still dimly lit.This is an advantage as the background isn't the main focus it is the character. 
• If we were to re-create this image again then we would have made the light brighter and also higher so that it lit more of the face and the top of the frame rather than just the bottom. 

Back Light Only

                       

We experimented with the back light which can be used to create the halo effect. We probably won't use this because we need natural light and down light to show the bathroom scene and make sure the setting is established by the light we will use.

Side Light Only

We also experiemented with side light which we wmight include this in our filming to create the effect of mystery and suspicion of what Craig is doing in the bathroom and the tension going through his face as the scene goes on.

Top Lighting Only

Top lighting shows more suspicion and is used throughout thrillers. We probably won't use this because the lighting is too dark and we need to really clearly be able to see our characters facial expression throughout the scene showing the different emotions through his features.

Bottom Up Lighting Only  

• I think this was done well as you can clearly see where the light is placed and lights up the face which is exactly what we aimed to do.
• Would be used in a thriller to see a characters facial expression if it was set in a dark background and you're not meant to see anything else. It also gives a daunting effect. 
• If we were to do it again, we would have found a darker setting so that the lighting had more of an effect.
• We also would have moved away from the window just so it was darker and that the lighting had a better effect and was clearer for the audience to see.

• The silhouete effect, we feel went the worse for us. We feel this because you are still able to see detail of the person. This is bad because silhouette effect is used in thrillers so audience are unable to make out who ther person is. Helping to create Enigma.
• We feel this went wrong because the room was to light and maybe the light was too bright.
• In this frame you are able to see the lighting stand.
• However we know where we went wrong and will be able to fix and improve next time round.
• We should have had a clearer and darker setting and moved the bags on the left.
• Anyhow, we would like to include the silhouette effect in our thriller sequence because it is good for keeping the audience guessing and at the edge of their seat and asking questions, which is good for an opening sequence to intrest the audience

• Even though the silhouette didn't work out we liked the idea because it creates a mystery of enigma, for example to start off an opening, you can tell the gender of the person but not the emotions the character is feeling by the look on his face which makes the audience wonder who and what the character is doing.
• We also liked the key and fill like for when we do the scene of Craig in the bathroom for example the key and fill light show quite a light setting  so even though its not a dim, dark mysterious light it will be more challenging to convey and thrilling scene but it gives us a chance to show more detail and expressions on his face to tell the audience what mood he is in.
• These effects create the atmosphere for a sequence by giving it that extra boost to set the mood for example the bottom up light creates shock and fright.We could use this in our own thriller sequence.
